Girls soccer ends season without a win
On October 14 the girls soccer headed to rival James Hubert Blake High School in hopes of a win. Both teams fought for the ball and kept the fans on the edge of their seats and jumping and cheering for their team in the 40 degree raining weather.
In the first half the Bengals scored with a lucky shot right to an opening of the goal. This made the Devils to want a win even more, which led to a penalty kick for Blake because of pushing inside the goal box. With only seven seconds left, Blake took the penalty kick and put it in the back of the net.
In the second half, the Devils kept up their intensity and had many breakaways down the center of the field. In the end of the second half, Blake took another penalty kick due to a clip to the heel by one of the defenders. Blake just barely placed a shot right over the reach of goal junior keeper Megan Savastuk.
"I believe that the penalty kicks were both bad calls because they were hand ball calls and they were both un-intentional. I think that it is sad that they defined the game," sophomore captain Sara Golshiri said.
On October 22, the girls went up against Richard Montgomery High School on their own field. The score was 0-2 at half time and in the second half the Rockets scored three goals making the final score 0-5. T he Devils played hard, with the fact that they only had one sub throughout the game.
"We only had one sub. We were really happy about the game, we played well, against a really good team," coach Wes Wise said. "I thought it was nice. The girls were able to get a lot of playing time. There were not a lot of girls; everyone got to play a lot of different positions they improved as the season went on."
There are hopes for next year’s
season so this incident does not happen again.
"More girls playing soccer, coming out and playing soccer," Wise said.
For their last game of the season the girls headed to Albert Einstein High School on Saturday October 24, before the varsity team at 10 a.m. In the first half the score was 0-0 and the score remained that way until the end. With only five minutes left Einstein made a goal winning the game 0-1.
"I think we all played well. Even though we did not have all our players we played our hardest through injuries and all. We fought through and did our best," junior captain Megan Savastuk said.
Players are very happy about the team work and intensity kept up throughout the whole season.
"Even though we didn’t win a lot of games we put our all into it and we stayed together as a team through it all," Savastuk said.
The team is satisfied about the season but is still looking ahead into the future for improvement that will help them next year.
"I think that we started off as strangers, and ended as a team. We still have a lot of room to improve for the seasons to come," Golshiri said.
The Girls team ended the season with a record of 0-11. But they are optimistic about next year.
