Soccer improves on last year’s record
The Blue Devils’ goals were not met this season with only one win recorded. However, coach Maria McAndrews is not disappointed with the quality of play the team has showed this season.
“I had anticipated a few more wins at this point in the season but unfortunately we have not been able to show up in the big games,” McAndrews said. “I have been satisfied with their level at play most times, I always think they can play better but I recently had been hopeful that their play would translate into more wins.”
With the recent rise of illness spreading through the student body and staff, the recent lack of team members forces major consequences upon the Blue Devils.
“The biggest issue right now is the injuries and illnesses, however other schools are facing the same thing and it has not affected their level of play,” McAndrews said. “I believe in my girls.”
The girls played Richard Montgomery High School on October 22, and a lost of 0-3. Yet the Blue Devils showed great improvement over previous games with stronger defense and timing.
The Richard Montgomery Rockets showed their determination with two goals in the first half; then continued their streak with one more goal in the second half of the game. Even with the consequences of injuries and illness, the team persevered throughout the game showing a great amount of effort.
“Even though we did not have the best season that we could have, we all played really well and improved greatly. Each one of us improved on something we had trouble with,” sophomore Evelyn Gaffney said.
The Blue Devils played their last game of the season on October 27 against Wheaton High School, winning the game 3-2. The pressure was on as Wheaton managed to tie the score during the second half, but sophomore Lindsey Pinckney scored the winning goal with five seconds left, after having suffered an injury.
“It felt really good to make that goal because it was our first win,” Pinckney said. “I think we did okay this season but we could have done better. We did not have as many wins as I would have thought but I still love my team.”
The team showed their appreciation for their captains by hosting a senior night to highlight every senior on the team. Players and spectators alike celebrated a close victory.
“We have had a lack of communication on the field, which was our major problem. But we are excited as a whole and ready, and also sad that it is all coming to an end now,” senior captain Kim Morales said.
With a unexpected season record of 1-11, the team has high hopes to practice harder and show vast improvement in the coming seasons. However, the girls have no regrets or disappointments regarding the outcome of the season.
“The final scores of the games we played do not show how hard we worked during the games and practices, and how we improved throughout the season,” Gaffney said. “I am looking forward to playing again next year!”
